Langford struggled with injuries in 2024. As a result, the Rangers rookie has only appeared in 52 of the team’s 77 games as of this writing. Still, the former top prospect looks like a strong candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. Langford’s numbers on the surface don’t read like a stretch. The outfielder has slashed .254/.313/.368/.681 in 52 games.

Langford also hit three home runs and had 30 RBIs. If the season ended today, Langford would not have won the award. But it’s only June. The basic numbers suggest that Langford could achieve more offensive consistency as the season progresses. According to Baseball Reference, Langford is hitting the ball hard more than 40 percent of the time.

Also, his BABip (batting average on balls in play) is .311, which still doesn’t look good. Langford’s ground ball rate (40.4 percent) is expected to decrease in the future. As he gets used to major league pitching, Langford will hit the ball in the air more often. Will it take him until next year to get used to it? Of course, that’s possible. But there’s a reason why Wyatt Langford was the best talent for the Rangers, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he solves that problem sooner rather than later.

Wyatt Langford Competition It will be interesting to watch the race for the AL Rookie of the Year. Perhaps the front-runner at the moment is Luis Gil. But after a great start to the season, Gil has had to endure ups and downs in his final appearances. Mason Miller has proven to be one of the best closers in MLB. He also plays for the Oakland Athletics, so he could be traded.

There’s no guarantee Miller will even finish the season in the AL. If Miller stays in the league, he’ll have to perform well all season, because closers don’t always win the award. Other candidates are Colton Cowser and Wyriyah Abreu. Again, there’s no guarantee at this point that a candidate will stand in front of Langford.

If the Rangers’ young star lives up to his potential, there’s no reason he can’t climb the AL Rookie of the Year leaderboard. If the Rangers get healthy again, Texas should play better overall. Playing on a good team can only be a positive for Langford.
