Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes that Lewis Hamilton has the potential to clinch his eighth championship title with Ferrari, as he discussed the seven-time world champion’s move to the Italian team.

Hamilton surprised the Formula One community with his announcement on February 1st, departing from Mercedes where he was set to race until 2025.

Despite being the most successful driver in Formula One history, Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari next year presents a new challenge. He currently shares the record of seven world championship titles with the legendary Michael Schumacher.

Wolff acknowledged Hamilton’s change of plans, expressing understanding and respect for his decision, while also emphasizing that Hamilton’s success at Ferrari will depend on the competitiveness of the team in the future.

“If Ferrari provides Lewis with a competitive car, he’s capable of winning a world championship. There’s no doubt about that. I’ll always cherish the personal relationship I have with Lewis and reflect on the great times we’ve had, both professionally and personally.

“When Lewis moves to Ferrari, he becomes a competitor, but I’ll always wish him the best,” Wolff told the PA news agency.

Hamilton described his departure from Mercedes as the toughest decision of his career, given their successful partnership that resulted in six world championship titles in seven years.

“Mercedes has been a significant part of my life since I was 13 years old, so this decision has been incredibly difficult. I’m immensely proud of all that we’ve accomplished together, and I’m grateful for the hard work and dedication of everyone I’ve worked with, especially Toto, for his friendship, guidance, and leadership.

“Together, we’ve clinched titles, shattered records, and forged the most successful driver-team partnership in F1 history. And, of course, I can’t forget Niki, who was a tremendous supporter and whom I miss dearly every day.”
