Hawthorn is optimistic about retaining veteran defender Sam Frost amid growing interest from rival clubs. As the Hawks look to strengthen their lineup with key additions like Tom Barrass and Josh Battle, the leadership remains confident in Frost’s vital role moving forward. Securing Barrass, who is currently contracted with West Coast, and convincing Frost to stay are key offseason priorities. Battle has already expressed his intent to join the Hawks via free agency next season.

The team is also working to re-sign Harry Morrison, though they recently missed out on free agent Harry Perryman from Greater Western Sydney. Additionally, Denver Grainger-Barras, a top draft pick from 2020, faces uncertainty during this trade period. After an impressive rise in the 2024 season, moving from 16th to 6th on the ladder and winning a final, Hawthorn is focused on fortifying their defense.

Barrass is expected to sign a four-year deal with a potential extension, which will enhance the Hawks’ defensive capabilities alongside Battle. However, this raises questions about Frost’s future role. Despite a late-season injury, Frost had a strong season, serving as a key lockdown defender. The coaching staff, including Sam Mitchell, has reassured Frost of his versatility and ongoing importance to the team.

To maintain a flexible defensive structure, Hawthorn plans to rotate key players like James Sicily, Josh Weddle, and Blake Hardwick across various roles. The team’s focus is on preparing for the challenges ahead while ensuring a balanced and competitive roster for the upcoming season.
