Hawthorn recruit is getting closer to making his AFL debut following a successful stay at Box Hill
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell considered including Mid-Season Draft addition Jasper Scaife in his extended squad for Sunday’s trip to Perth, impressed by the Western Australian’s performance.
Scaife, 19, joined the Hawks from West Perth as the fifth overall pick after a strong start to his 2024 season in the WAFL with the Falcons. Known for his sharp shooting and aerial skills, the 196cm forward boosts Mitchell’s key position stocks.
He made his VFL debut for Box Hill before the club’s Round 15 bye, scoring three goals from 14 disposals and seven marks, putting him in contention for an AFL debut later this season. However, a recent jaw procedure and the club’s development plan keep him on the fringes of selection.
Mitchell said on Friday that while taking Scaife to his home state would have been appealing, more game time at the state league level is preferable. “There’s a part of me that would love him to come experience matchday in WA, but I really want him to play footy. If he came over with us he wouldn’t be able to play,” Mitchell explained.
“He had a procedure on his jaw during the break, so he’s probably not quite ready for AFL footy just yet. I couldn’t be more pleased with his first month at the club. His training, work ethic, connection with the players, and relationship building have been excellent. He’s even kicked a couple of torps that have impressed the team at training.
“I’m pretty excited about where he’s at. He’s not quite ready for AFL. The Perth story would’ve been nice, but he’s not ready yet.”
Scaife is set to pair with spearhead Mitch Lewis again this weekend against Port Melbourne. Lewis, who hasn’t returned to Mitchell’s side due to a persistent hamstring injury, scored 1.1 from eight disposals and four marks in limited minutes against the Tigers in Round 12.
Box Hill hosts the Borough at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday afternoon, while the Hawks face West Coast at Optus Stadium on Sunday for Round 16.
