The top-ranked Houston Cougars faced adversity with the injuries of Terrence Arceneaux and Joseph Tugler during the season, but Jamal Shead’s injury in the first half of their defeat to the Duke Blue Devils added to their challenges.

Despite their efforts, the Big 12 champions couldn’t overcome the five-time national champions in Dallas, resulting in a 54-51 loss that halted Houston’s March Madness journey. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, the All-American, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and conference Player of the Year suffered an ankle injury while driving to the basket, forcing him out of the game in pain.

Shead exited the game with 6:38 remaining in the first half, needing assistance from two trainers. Reports during halftime suggested his return was uncertain, with X-rays showing no serious damage but indicating a severe ankle sprain.

While there was a possibility of his return, he remained on the bench for the entirety of the second half. Despite his absence, Houston’s defense managed to force 14 turnovers by Duke. This marks the program’s second consecutive exit in the Sweet Sixteen.
