In response to a string of violent incidents in the New York City subway system, Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a comprehensive five-point safety plan. This initiative includes the deployment of hundreds of National Guard troops and the installation of additional security cameras.

Governor Hochul disclosed that a total of 1,000 personnel, comprising 750 National Guard troops and MTA Police, will be stationed in the subway system to assist the NYPD in conducting bag checks to prevent weapons from being brought onto trains.

“Let me just be very, very clear. These brazen, heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,” stated Governor Hochul on Wednesday.

This announcement came on the heels of Mayor Eric Adams’ declaration on Tuesday to augment the number of police officers and reinstate bag checks.

“I know how it plays on your psyche when you hear about some random acts of violence, and that’s why we must be proactive,” Mayor Adams conveyed in an interview with CBS New York earlier on Wednesday, preceding Governor Hochul’s announcement.

Both the governor and mayor assert that the new safety plan aims to safeguard both passengers and transit workers. However, shortly after the plan was revealed, another subway conductor was assaulted. The conductor was reportedly struck on the head with a bottle at the East 170th/Jerome Avenue station in the Bronx, as confirmed by the NYPD.
