The Virginia Tech football defense this year has a chance to be among the stronger ones in the ACC. They’re bringing back several players from a team that excelled at pressuring the quarterback in 2023, along with adding key transfer portal defensive linemen and a linebacker who will pose challenges for opposing offenses.

After facing Vanderbilt, Marshall, Old Dominion, and Rutgers in their non-conference games, the Hokies will start their ACC schedule against Miami followed by a match against first-year member Stanford. During conference play, they’ll encounter talented quarterbacks, and here are the top three quarterbacks Virginia Tech and defensive coordinator Chris Marve will face this fall.

Similarly, there’s growing anticipation around Georgia Tech, which is expected to improve this fall with a strong returning talent base. Last season, they achieved a 6-6 regular season record before winning the Gasparilla Bowl against Central Florida with a score of 30-17. King emerged as a standout player for the Yellow Jackets last season and is expected to continue his impressive performance.

In 2023, he threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns, with an additional 737 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Despite a solid 61.6% completion rate, Georgia Tech needs him to reduce the 16 interceptions he threw for them to compete in 2024, especially with a challenging schedule ahead. Their matchup against Virginia Tech in late October promises to be compelling.

Clemson’s coach, Dabo Swinney, will lead his Tigers to Lane Stadium in early November, featuring experienced quarterback Cade Klubnik, who had a commendable 2023 season with 2,844 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, along with a 63.9% completion rate. Although primarily a pocket passer, Klubnik managed four rushing touchdowns, contributing to Clemson’s tied sixth-place finish in the ACC. The game against Clemson will be the highlight of Virginia Tech’s home schedule.

Cam Ward faced a pivotal decision upon entering the transfer portal: to declare for the NFL Draft or pursue another year of college football. Opting for the latter, he joined South Florida and coach Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes. Ward’s performance for Washington State in the previous season showcased his talent, with 3,735 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, a 66.6% completion rate, and minimal interceptions.

Additionally, he scored eight rushing touchdowns. His addition significantly bolsters Miami’s quarterback lineup, potentially elevating their competitiveness in the ACC and towards a spot in the expanded 12-team playoff. Virginia Tech’s ACC opener against Miami in September will feature Kyron Drones facing off against Ward, whom he trained with during the offseason.
