How can that be All for the Senators when there’s still a lot more to…

The acquisition of goaltender Linus Ullmark from the Boston Bruins marks one of the most significant moves made by the Ottawa Senators during this off-season. This addition of the 2023 Vezina Trophy winner is expected to greatly enhance the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

General Manager Steve Staios is actively exploring other potential moves in his efforts to transform the Senators into a competitive playoff team. One player who has been at the center of trade rumors for quite some time is defenseman Jakob Chychrun. With one year remaining on his contract, which carries a cap hit of $4.6 million and includes a 10-team no-trade clause, Chychrun’s future with the team is uncertain.

The Senators already have left-shot defensemen so Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson signed to lucrative long-term contracts, leaving Chychrun as the odd man out. In light of the Ullmark trade, there has been speculation, as suggested by Tim Baines of the Ottawa Sun, that Chychrun could be the next player to be moved out of Ottawa. While the Senators could retain Chychrun on their roster for the 2024-25 season and explore a potential trade at the deadline, Baines believes this scenario is unlikely.

Baines expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of the Senators re-signing Chychrun and trading Chabot, who will have a modified no-trade clause starting on July 1. Senators GM Steve Staios refuted rumors of Chabot being available for trade, stating that such discussions have not taken place.

Speculation suggests that the Senators may have a potential deal with the Philadelphia Flyers in the works, possibly involving Chychrun. According to The Hockey News’ Sam Stockton, several teams, including the Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings, have shown interest in Chychrun. The Wings recently traded defenseman Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks to free up cap space.

In addition to Chychrun, defenseman Erik Brannstrom is also reportedly on the trade block, with a decision on whether to qualify his rights before June 30 pending. Furthermore, there are concerns that Brannstrom, Chychrun, and winger Mathieu Joseph may have played their final games with the Senators, as suggested by Steve Warne.
