Saturday night’s overtime clash in Toronto against the Maple Leafs encapsulated the Carolina Hurricanes’ eventful preceding 10 days. As the 3-on-3 overtime period commenced, Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour found himself in a moment of reflection. While his usual top skill players like Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, and Andrei Svechnikov were available, Brind’Amour suddenly realized he had a plethora of new options at his disposal. Jake Guentzel and Evgeny Kuznetsov, acquired through significant trades in March, added depth to the Hurricanes’ forward lines, prompting Brind’Amour to adjust to the new lineup possibilities.

“It’s like Christmas, right?” remarked Brind’Amour.

However, when Guentzel took the ice in overtime, he faced an undesirable situation reminiscent of a new student inadvertently landing in trouble. Guentzel promptly incurred a slashing penalty, causing him considerable nerves. In just his third game with the Hurricanes after being traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Guentzel was determined not to sabotage his team’s late comeback from a 4-2 deficit with only 1:32 remaining. Fortunately, the Canes successfully killed off the penalty. Interestingly, Guentzel, one of Brind’Amour’s recent acquisitions, was selected to take a crucial shot in the subsequent shootout. He delivered, securing victory for Carolina against the Leafs, prompting jubilant celebrations from his teammates.

According to Brind’Amour, the adjustment hasn’t been straightforward for Guentzel and Kuznetsov. Both players hail from Metro Division adversaries and have crossed paths with the Hurricanes numerous times in their careers. Guentzel has been working to regain his form after recovering from a lower-body injury that sidelined him for four weeks, while Kuznetsov is striving to recapture his confidence following his departure from the Washington Capitals and his time in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. Despite their stellar NHL careers and Stanley Cup triumphs, Brind’Amour observes a degree of hesitancy in their play initially.

“It’s going to require some time for these guys to settle in,” he remarked. “I can sense they’re still a bit tentative and uncertain about their roles, but I believe it will improve with time.”
