I was approached by Aston Villa to sign, but I was unable to complete one final need.

Troy Deeney has acknowledged that, if he could have taken a piece of Birmingham City with him, he may have played for bitter rivals Aston Villa.

Although the former Blues striker is a devoted supporter of his former team, he told talkSPORT he could have played for both teams in the Second City derby.

The rivalry between the West Midland teams is greater than that between Arsenal and Tottenham, according to Deeney on White & Jordan.

But in that same occasion, he disclosed that he could

having performed well for both teams, even though he previously acknowledged that, while at Watford in January 2020, he attempted to fight Villa players after a 2-1 loss.

Deeney was raised six miles from St Andrew’s, despite being born in Birmingham, and he even had the club’s crest permanently inked on his leg.

He later played for the Blues from 2021 to 2023, but Villa had approached him earlier, and his body ink had proven to be a point of contention.

The forward joked that if he had moved, it would have been hard to see his family, who are from Birmingham, but it would not have been possible because of the concept of covering or removing his tattoo.

“No, I wouldn’t have [had it removed], which is why it didn’t get too far,” Deeney continued.

“My entire family supports Birmingham City, with the exception of my brother, who strangely chose to go against the flow. My best friend is a devoted fan of Birmingham City.

“It would have been challenging to live there and visit the family if I had spent a few months playing for Aston Villa.

“I’m sure they would have got over it afterwards”
