Iga Swiatek has acknowledged her occasional lack of consistency and tendency to have “random thoughts” during matches ahead of the 2024 Madrid Open final. Despite being the world No. 1, she assessed that she has yet to deliver a match against one of her main rivals where she executed her tactics “better from start to finish.”
Swiatek is set to face world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid Open final, marking their 10th encounter, with Swiatek holding a 6-3 head-to-head advantage. Seeking her first Madrid Open title after losing to Sabalenka in the 2023 final, the 22-year-old, who boasts an 8-2 record in WTA 1000 finals, aims for her third title of the year following victories in Qatar and Indian Wells.
Reflecting on her journey to the final after defeating Madison Keys in the semi-finals, Swiatek discussed her mental approach, acknowledging the need to adapt to conditions quickly during the tournament.
While admitting to experiencing random thoughts, Swiatek emphasized the importance of managing them effectively. She also acknowledged that her approach isn’t consistently strong every day but expressed confidence in her ability to deliver good tennis regardless.
Swiatek emphasized the challenge of sticking to her game plan against elite opponents, aiming to execute her tactics better from start to finish in matches against them.
