This year’s NFL Draft class presents an intriguing lineup of prospects, with the Washington Commanders holding the No. 2 overall pick and aiming to inject star power into their upcoming era. Speculation abounds regarding the franchise’s choice, with names like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels surfacing as top quarterback contenders. Given Commanders’ offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s history with Caleb Williams at USC, his name has garnered attention. However, in NFL.com’s latest mock draft, the Commanders opt for LSU’s Jayden Daniels to kick off their new chapter.

The selection of Jayden Daniels aligns with Coach Dan Quinn’s defensive background, as Daniels is touted as the best dual-threat QB in the draft. His ability to wreak havoc with both his arm and legs poses a challenge for opposing defenses. Daniels, who clinched the Heisman Trophy in 2023, boasts impressive stats, showcasing his prowess as both a passer and rusher.

In terms of passing, Daniels amassed 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns, and merely four interceptions, boasting a completion rate of 72.2% and a QBR of 95.6. His rushing stats are equally impressive, with 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 8.4 yards per rush. Daniels’ ability to capitalize on opportunities and punish defenses underscores his value to the Commanders.

While it’s unlikely that Daniels will replicate his collegiate rushing numbers in the NFL, given the risks associated with running quarterbacks, the Commanders are expected to employ his rushing talents judiciously in their offensive schemes. With Daniels at the helm, the Commanders usher in a new era filled with optimism and anticipation, setting the stage for exciting times ahead.
