The Atlanta Braves are eagerly awaiting news on the condition of their top pitcher, Spencer Strider, who was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow last Saturday.

In Strider’s absence, Allan Winans has been selected to take his place as the starting pitcher when the Braves face off against the New York Mets on Wednesday night in an ongoing four-game series.

Strider’s evaluation is ongoing this week, with the Braves anticipating more information about his recovery by the weekend.

Atlanta’s manager, Brian Snitker, commented, “I don’t know what the treatment is gonna be. They’re in discussions right now as to what the next step is. That’s all I know.”

Winans, who made his MLB debut with the Braves last season, has been called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill in. The 28-year-old started six games for the Braves last season and has a record of 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 2023.

Originally a 17th-round draft pick by the Mets in 2018, Winans recently started for Gwinnett on April 2, where he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Louisville Bats.

After a narrow 6-5 victory against the Mets on Tuesday, fueled by standout performances from Ronald Acuna Jr. and Jarred Kelenic, the Braves aim to continue their momentum into Wednesday’s game.

The Mets will counter with left-hander Jose Quintana (0-1, 2.61 ERA), who delivered a solid performance in his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds.

While the Mets showed resilience in their attempt to overcome a 6-0 deficit on Tuesday, highlighted by Pete Alonso’s three-run homer, they ultimately fell short.

Additionally, the Mets will be without J.D. Martinez for a while longer due to lower back tightness. Martinez, who joined the Mets as a free agent after a strong season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, received a cortisone injection and hopes to return to the lineup by the end of the month.
