Is Curtis Samuel a Better Sign than Brandin Cooks?

FRISCO: A straightforward inquiry that gets down to the point about a national media suggestion that “connects” the Dallas Cowboys to the “need for a No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb”… What makes Curtis Samuel superior to Brandin Cooks? In order to acquire Brandin Cooks, Dallas arranged a trade with the Houston Texans a year ago. Both the salary and the trade price were rather low; Cooks’ contract is set to expire in 2024, with an additional year of $8 million basic pay remaining. How well did he do in 2023? Some have called it a “disappointment,” given that he finished with 657 yards passing via the air on 54 receptions and eight touchdowns.
Dallas does not, in our opinion, find it “disappointing,” particularly when one considers Cooks’ leadership and class. Where, then, does the conjecture that Dallas requires an improvement for CeeDee Lamb’s running mate originate, and more especially, who believes Curtis Samuel is that improvement? Bleacher Report’s “NFL Scouting Department” believes Samuel, who has been with the Washington Commanders for the past three years, may be a good fit for them in that aspect. He caught 62 receptions for 613 yards and four touchdowns in the previous season, which is less than Cooks did.
Would playing alongside Lamb and with Dak Prescott in Dallas help those numbers? Of course. Maybe, though, we should take a closer look at Samuel in Washington, where the word “disappointment” is undoubtedly accurate. He caught 64 balls with four touchdowns in 2022. Not very impressive. After receiving a hefty salary to relocate to Washington in 2021, he struggled to play due to a string of injuries that frustrated his coaching staff. He only started one game, appeared in five, and contributed six catches in total that season. Six. It’s unclear if the Cowboys “need” that.
Can the Cowboys “all in” to sign a receiver who is significantly better than Cooks from the Mike Evans-led receiver-free-agency list? Perhaps not. Will Cooks become a cap victim as a result of their actions? That is conjectured. Can two young players already on The Star roster, Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks, possibly outperform someone like Curtis Samuel? might be their best option.
