Is Oregon Football Looking to Sign Two Quarterbacks in 2025?

Oregon has emerged as a premier destination for top-tier quarterbacks nationwide. Notable names like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, Austin Novosad, Dante Moore, and Luke Moga either have donned the Ducks’ uniform or are poised to do so in the future.

While these quarterbacks have added significant talent to Eugene, it’s essential for the coaching staff to maintain a broader perspective. This is precisely why Offensive Coordinator Will Stein and the Ducks secured a verbal commitment from Akili Smith Jr., a quarterback from San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln, for the 2025 class.

However, it appears that Oregon is not content with just one quarterback commitment. According to a recent report by Greg Biggins of 247Sports, the Ducks remain actively engaged with another top quarterback prospect from the western region.

Biggins reports that Husan Longstreet, the quarterback for the 2025 Corona (Calif.) Centennial, intends to travel to Oregon in April.

Biggins’ report indicates that the 6-foot, 190-pound quarterback has lined up visits to Auburn and Texas A&M for next month. This development raises an intriguing question: Does Oregon intend to sign two quarterbacks in the 2025 class? Or is there a perceived need for two quarterbacks in this recruiting cycle?

Currently, the prevailing belief is that Dillon Gabriel will assume the starting role for the Ducks in 2024, with a competition anticipated in 2025. This competition would likely involve Dante Moore, potentially the frontrunner, along with Austin Novosad, Luke Moga, and Akili Smith Jr. It’s customary for teams to have four scholarship quarterbacks, which adds an interesting dimension to the prospect of adding another quarterback like Longstreet to the mix.

While some may argue that Oregon does not necessarily require another quarterback this cycle, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if they pursued one. The importance of the quarterback position in college football cannot be overstated, and the landscape is characterized by fluidity, with quarterbacks frequently entering the transfer portal if they don’t secure playing time. This makes it challenging to maintain patience in developing a long-term starter. However, the Ducks are in a favorable position to have a stable quarterback situation in 2025 and beyond, particularly if Moore or another quarterback on the roster steps up.

While Longstreet has recently been linked to Texas A&M, it’s commendable that Oregon is remaining engaged in his recruitment. Recruiting is unpredictable, and circumstances can change rapidly. In terms of other quarterbacks to monitor for the 2025 class, the notable name is Malik Washington from Severn (Md.) Archbishop Spalding, who remains uncommitted but has received an offer from the Ducks. Additionally, offers have been extended to Bryce Underwood (LSU commit), George MacIntyre (Tennessee commit), and Julian Lewis (USC commit). Ultimately, Longstreet’s situation is worth monitoring as Oregon continues to navigate the quarterback landscape for the future.
