Former Ipswich Town striker Alex Mathie emphasized the need for Kieran McKenna’s team to elevate their performance against Southampton, although he remains optimistic about their ability to find the back of the net.

Ipswich clinched a hard-fought victory at Ewood Park, securing three crucial points against Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday, which propelled them to the top of the Championship table while Leeds United and Leicester City stumbled.

Mathie acknowledged the resilience of the Ipswich squad under McKenna, highlighting their determination to compete until the final whistle. However, he stressed the importance of an improved display when they face Southampton at Portman Road on Easter Monday.

Despite recognizing Southampton’s attacking prowess, Mathie expressed confidence that Ipswich will create scoring opportunities, given Southampton’s vulnerability in defense.

Speaking on BBC Radio Suffolk, Mathie commented, “You can’t write off this Ipswich Town team… They just keep going to the end. We need to do better against Southampton, but we will score goals because they give you chances. It’s going to be a great game on Monday, I am looking forward to it.”

Ipswich Town is poised to potentially achieve a remarkable feat by securing back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the Premier League, a feat not accomplished since Norwich City in 2011.
