Kalvin Phillips found himself in the midst of controversy after West Ham’s 5-3 defeat to Newcastle, as he responded to criticism from frustrated fans by flashing his middle finger.

The incident occurred as Phillips was boarding the team coach back from Newcastle. While approached by fans, one requested a photo, but another supporter labeled Phillips as ‘useless.’ In reaction to the criticism, Phillips raised his middle finger, escalating the situation further.

Phillips, on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, had a tough outing in the match against Newcastle. Coming on as a substitute in the 69th minute, he struggled to make an impact and ultimately conceded a penalty after making contact with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon. This further frustrated West Ham supporters, who had expected better from the midfielder.

The match itself was a rollercoaster, with Newcastle taking the lead early on through a penalty from Isak. West Ham fought back, but Phillips’ foul on Gordon led to another penalty for Newcastle, and two late goals from Harvey Barnes sealed the victory for the home side.

Phillips’ challenges at West Ham follow a difficult spell at Manchester City, where he made only four Premier League appearances in the first half of the season. With pressure mounting, Phillips will aim to make amends for his actions with improved performances when West Ham faces their next match on Tuesday.
