Jannik Sinner’s triumph over Ben Shelton not only propelled him to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells tournament but also marked his 150th career victory on hard courts. Additionally, with this win, Sinner maintains a flawless record of 15-0 for the year 2024.

In their fourth-round clash at Indian Wells on Tuesday night, Ben Shelton posed a considerable challenge for Jannik Sinner in the opening set. However, the Italian managed to maintain his flawless start to the year, extending his record to 15-0 in 2024 with a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over the American, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 event.

Having split their previous two encounters last fall, with Shelton prevailing in Shanghai and Sinner gaining revenge in Vienna, this matchup promised excitement from the outset. Reflecting on the match, Sinner expressed pride in his performance despite the lack of rhythm and challenging windy conditions.

Sinner’s unbeaten streak in 2024, which includes a flawless run to win the Australian Open and triumphs in Rotterdam, now stands at 15 matches. Moreover, adding his three victories from the end of 2023, his overall winning streak extends to an impressive 18 matches, marking the longest tour-level winning streak for an Italian man in the Open Era.

Notably, Sinner’s victory over Shelton also marked his 150th career win on hard courts, making him the first man born in the 2000s to achieve this milestone at just 22 years old.

In their match on Tuesday night, Jannik Sinner struck first in tennis paradise by breaking for a 3-2 lead. Despite maintaining that break until serving for the set at 5-4 and even holding a set point at 40-30, Ben Shelton mounted a spirited comeback. Shelton fought off the set point and broke back to level the set at 5-all, ultimately holding serve to take a 6-5 lead, despite facing a 0-40 deficit.

The set proceeded to a tie-break, where momentum swung back and forth. Sinner initially seized a double mini-break advantage at 4-1, but Shelton clawed back to equalize at 4-all. However, Sinner regained control, winning the final three points in a row to clinch the tightly contested first set in 68 minutes. The Italian then dominated the second set, wrapping it up in just 30 minutes.

Statistically, Sinner showcased his efficiency with 17 winners and only 11 unforced errors, while Shelton struggled with 14 winners and a staggering 35 unforced errors.

In the quarterfinals, Sinner will face Jiri Lehecka, the No. 32 seed, who upset Andrey Rublev in the third round and continued his impressive run with a straight-sets victory over No. 11 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier on Tuesday. This will be their first meeting at the tour level, although they previously clashed at a Challenger event on clay in Ostrava, Czech Republic in 2019, with Sinner emerging victorious.
