Joe Johnson, a young defender for Luton, helped the England U18 team defeat the Morocco U18 team 2-1 on Sunday at St George’s Park to win the first-ever U18 Tri-Nations Trophy.

At the beginning of the match, Johnson, who had started the 4-2 triumph over the Northern Ireland U18s earlier in the week, was on the bench as the visitors took the lead, with Mohammed Hamony finding the bottom corner after 14 minutes. The Young Lions had a chance to tie the score when Elijah Morrison of Bristol City crossed the ball for Matthew Warhust of Manchester City, but Taha Benrhozi expertly saved his header.

Following the interval, Manchester United’s Ethan Wheatley leveled the score for England when Romelle Donovan, a replacement, beat two opponents and then collected the ensuing cross. Following Johnson’s substitution for Arsenal’s Ayden Heaven on minute 69, Wheatley scored his second goal shortly after, tapping in from six yards to give the Young Lions a 2-1 lead. They maintained this advantage in the closing minutes to guarantee Tom Curtis’s team finished first in their group with six points from two games.

The England U18 team consists of the following players: Law McCabe (Myles Lewis-Skelly 61), Amara Nallo (Harrison Murray-Campbell 69), Ayden Heaven (Joe Johnson 69), Ato Ampah (Souleymane Sidibe 69), Lewis Orford (Trey Nyoni 69), Ajay Matthews (Ethan Wheatley 46), Matthew Warhurst (Romelle Donovan 46), Elijah Morrison (Somto Boniface 46), Law Pickford (Sam Proctor 46), Elijah Morrison (Somto Boniface 46), and Jamaldeen Jimoh (Kadan Young 69).
