Jontay Porter, a current player for the Toronto Raptors, has been suspended by the NBA for giving sports bettors access to private information.

After the league conducted an investigation, it was found that Porter had given a known NBA bettor private information about his own health situation before March 20. Additionally, it was discovered that Porter had restricted his personal attendance at one or more basketball games in order to place bets.

The NBA claims that the known Porter associate thereafter wagered that Porter would perform poorly in the 20 March matchup against the Sacramento Kings and won $1.1 million by placing a $80,000 parlay proposition bet with an internet sportsbook. The Raptors were defeated, 123–89.

Additionally, it was found that between January and March of this year, the accused exploited the associate’s online betting account to place at least 13 wagers on NBA games. The wagers that were made ranged in size from $15 to $22,000, with the least being the smallest. $54,094 in total was wagered on NBA games, yielding a payoff of $76,059. The net total of winnings was $21,965.

After the NBA was notified by authorized sports betting operators of questionable betting behavior, the investigation got underway.

“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport,” the NBA Commissioner said in response to Porter’s suspension. “That’s why Jontay Porter’s flagrant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.”

In an effort to educate gamblers that sports betting is solely meant for amusement, the NBA, MLB, and NHL collaborated on a responsible betting advertising campaign last year.
