The Old Trafford cup curse seemed to persist for Liverpool, as they were left with nothing but regrets after their defeat to Manchester United.

Despite the historical significance of the match, with Liverpool seeking their first away triumph in knockout competitions against Manchester United in over a century, it wasn’t external factors that dashed their hopes of a quadruple.

Rather, Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final exit was largely a result of their own shortcomings. While they had opportunities to secure victory, they repeatedly allowed United back into the game, making it more competitive than it should have been.

Although there was a lackluster start, Liverpool managed to take a 2-1 lead into halftime and dominated for a significant portion of the second half. However, their failure to capitalize on scoring chances, combined with strong goalkeeping from Andre Onana, prevented them from extending their lead.

Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions, which saw Cody Gakpo replace Mohamed Salah and Conor Bradley struggle against Alejandro Garnacho, didn’t have the desired impact. Additionally, Harvey Elliott’s mistake ultimately led to United’s late winner.

Fatigue seemed to set in for some Liverpool players during extra time, possibly exacerbated by their recent Europa League match against Sparta Prague. In contrast, United had a full week to prepare, which may have contributed to their eventual victory.

Klopp admitted that the match was one too many for his squad, despite their commendable efforts to compete on multiple fronts despite injuries.

While the loss may have brought back memories of previous disappointments at Old Trafford, this time, regret overshadowed disappointment. Liverpool had the opportunity to secure victory but ultimately fell short, ending their hopes of a Wembley appearance under Klopp’s tenure.
