Caleb Williams, a star at USC, is just “not special,” according to former ESPN NFL analyst Merril Hoge, who thinks it would be a terrible idea for the Chicago Bears to choose him in place of Justin Fields.

In April, the Bears will have to make a significant choice. Because they think current starting quarterback and former first-round pick Justin Fields is their franchise signal-caller, they believe they will have the top overall pick in the NFL Draft for the second straight year. They will have to decide whether to use their pick on the best quarterback in this class or go in a different direction.

Many in the NFL think the Bears won’t pass up this exceptional chance since Caleb Williams is regarded as a can’t-miss prospect, unlike last year when they traded out of the No. 1 pick. Merril Hoge, a former Pittsburgh Steelers player and current ESPN NFL commentator, thinks the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner might be a huge mistake.

Could Caleb Williams be a draft bust for the Chicago Bears?

This week, in an interview with uStadium before to the Super Bowl, Hoge leveled some serious criticisms at Williams and cautioned the Chicago Bears from attempting to atone for their error in the 2017 NFL Draft, as they think Williams has the potential to become the next Patrick Mahomes.

“I’m barely halfway through; I only saw Caleb Williams in three games this year and three games last year. He stated, “The one thing that is certain is that he is not unique. “He is not special in the same way as Patrick Mahomes, so I hope the Bears don’t decide to try to make up for the fact that we passed on Patrick Mahomes by signing [him] right away. Patrick Mahomes is not this child. Not even close.

Despite having four offensive coordinators during his NFL career, the Hoge feels Justin Fields has done enough to establish his franchise quarterback potential. He also thinks Caleb Williams would be a risk as the first overall choice.

“Justin Fields is not treated fairly. Throughout his career, he has frequently had new coordinators, according to Hoge. When you do that, there is no way for you to know anything about your [quarterback]. It’s the worst thing that can happen to a quarterback in particular. Based on my assessment, I would not let Justin Fields leave because I see enough growth and optimism in him. There is enough there, in my opinion.

In the 2017 NFL Draft, the Bears made the controversial decision to choose Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick. At 10, Mahomes was selected eight picks later.
