JUST IN: Commanders Antonio Gibson, RB joining the Patriots

One of the free agents who the Washington Commanders seem to be moving on from is joining the New England Patriots.

At the beginning of the open negotiation session, the Washington Commanders have been active, reaching agreements with center Tyler Biadasz and former Dallas Cowboys edge defender Dorance Armstrong.

One former member of the Commanders’ own team was busy joining the New England Patriots as they were busy bringing in former Cowboys.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Antonio Gibson, a former running back for Washington, is on his way to the Patriots.

Tweeted on Monday afternoon, “#Patriots are signing former #Commanders RB Antonio Gibson,” according to a source.

With starter Rhamondre Stevenson signed for the next two seasons, along with players like JaMycal Hasty, Kevin Harris, and Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Gibson will join a highly congested running back room in New England.

According to reports, Gibson has a three-year contract; the terms are not yet known.

Gibson joined the league as a third-round selection of the Commanders in the NFL Draft, having previously played receiver with the Memphis Tigers.

During his first season, Gibson made 10 starts as an immediate running back convert and amassed little over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in his first year in the NFL.

While starting 14 of 16 games and amassing another 1,000 yards of yardage in 2021, he also fumbled six times, prompting Washington to pursue other alternatives at running back and choose Brian Robinson Jr. in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Gibson lost his starting spot to Robinson that same season and never got it back over the next two years, despite the fact that he was never completely out of the fans’ favor and that even the media seemed to think his skill set showed more promise than the Commanders had gotten out of him.
