On Saturday, Manchester City defeated Newcastle 2-0 to go to the FA Cup semifinals, and Coventry stunned Wolves 3-2 with two goals in stoppage time. Bernardo Silva scored twice for Manchester City. With 22 games played without a loss across all competitions, holders City are still on track to replicate their treble victory from last season—winning the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s team is leading the way. However, luck was on the English champions’ side as Silva misdirected two efforts to fool Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

At the 13-minute mark, the Portuguese international gave the score a start when his shot deflected off Dan Burn.

Even though Silva’s second goal bounced off Sven Botman, Dubravka still had a chance to improve as the ball crept under him.

On the other side, Stefan Ortega made an incredible stop to prevent Alexander Isak from giving Newcastle a goal back, making City’s top goalkeeper Ederson look unmissable.

The growth of Coventry under Robins

Conversely, Coventry advanced to their first semi-final since their one and only victory in the competition, which came in a thrilling five-goal match at Molineux in 1987.

Ellis Simms’ contentious first goal for the Sky Blues early in the second half came about following a VAR review for what appeared to be a handball by the Coventry striker.

The Championship team appeared to have wasted their opportunity to go to Wembley, though, when Wolves scored twice in the last seven minutes of the ninety minutes.

After taking advantage of a mistake made by Joel Latibeaudiere, Rayan Ait-Nouri scored the equalizer and set up Hugo Bueno, another left-back, to shoot his first goal as a senior into the bottom corner.

But in the 97th minute, Simms’ second goal of the game tied the score, and three minutes later, he set up American international Haji Wright to shoot into the corner.

The drama didn’t end there, as Coventry manager Mark Robins’ celebrations in front of a teenage ball boy were called “disgusting” by Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

Late in the game, the ball boy’s attempts to squander time infuriated Robins, who then apologized.

“I apologise to him, I don’t show emotion very often but that is what the FA Cup does to you,” Robins replied.

As recently as the 2017–18 season, Coventry—a founding member of the Premier League—fell from the top division to the fourth in English football.

However, under Robins, they have received two promotions and, last season, lost the Championship playoff final to Luton on penalties, just missing out on a return to the Premier League.

The final four will once again take place at Wembley, but Robins is realistic about his team’s chances of winning because teams like City or Liverpool might be waiting in the semifinals.

We do have a slim chance. “We are excited to attend the game at Wembley,” Robins continued.

“I don’t want to go there and merely invent the figures. We are not ignorant; we are aware that the levels are constantly rising.”
