JUST IN: Gio Urshela might play in New York again in 2024.

Gio Urshela is still unsigned as spring training approaches. But it doesn’t appear that he will be without a team for very long.

The New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Miami Marlins are “three teams in particular stand out as having interest in Gio Urshela,” according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi on Wednesday. The New York teams’ attempts were, however, dashed by MLB.com’s Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch, who stated on X that although the Mets and Yankees are interested, the “Angels and Marlins have made better offers at this time.”

In 228 plate appearances, Urshela batted.299 with two home runs and 24 RBI while playing for the Angels in 2023. Urshela is renowned for his defensive flexibility; he played shortstop, first base, and third base last season with great results at third base. His offense was worth a 91 OPS+.

With the bat, the 32-year-old is also not a total zero. He hit.292 with 41 home runs and a 119 OPS+ in 1,092 plate appearances from 2019 to 21 with the Yankees, so it’s unlikely that he’ll relive that magical magic, but in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins, he showed above-average offensive potential. A powerful defender who can contribute above averagely at the plate would be acquired by a team.

It would provide the Yankees (DJ LeMahieu) and Mets (Brett Baty) insurance in the infield and at third base, but maybe Urshela wants more money along with a clearer route to playing time.
