LAS VEGAS: A league source announced on Monday that Jerry Montgomery will be joining the Patriots as their defensive line coach.

After joining the Green Bay Packers as their new defensive coordinator, former Boston College coach Jeff Hafley, Montgomery, 44, found out lately that he will not be extended.

Montgomery was the defensive line coach for Green Bay for the previous six seasons; however, after coach Jerod Mayo elevated DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, Montgomery’s position in New England became open. Montgomery has also been Green Bay’s run game coordinator for the past two seasons; the Patriots haven’t used this role in previous years.

Including rookie Keion White, Barmore, Deatrich Wise Jr., Davon Godchaux, and Lawrence Guy, much of New England’s defensive line is still under contract through 2024. Anfernee Jennings, a linebacker who showed promise as a run stopper this past season, is scheduled to become a free agency.

Montgomery has a long history in coaching defensive lines; he worked as a collegiate defensive line coach for eight years. Montgomery worked at Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma before joining the Packers in 2015.

Having spent four seasons overlapping in Green Bay, Montgomery is already acquainted with Alex Van Pelt, the new offensive coordinator for the Patriots. Additionally, he spent three seasons working alongside Eliot Wolf, the Patriots’ director of scouting.

On the defensive end, Mayo and Covington still have a number of roles to decide. Steve Belichick, who was offered the chance to go back to New England, will take over as Washington’s defensive coordinator.
