Leeds United ventured away to play against Plymouth Argyle in the early kick-off on Saturday and stretched their winning streak in the Sky Bet Championship to eight games, securing another crucial three points.

The previous three meetings between these teams this season, including two in the Emirates FA Cup, were all tightly contested, and this trend persisted as rain poured down once again in Devon.

Similar to their victory over Swansea City midweek, Leeds applied early pressure on Plymouth’s goal and pressed high, resulting in the opening goal within the first 10 minutes. Ilia Gruev initiated the move by finding Georginio Rutter, who then spotted Willy Gnonto’s run and delivered a well-weighted pass over the defense. Gnonto demonstrated excellent control, evaded the last defender, and slotted the ball home via the post.

Aside from his attacking prowess displayed with the early goal, Gnonto also contributed defensively, working hard alongside Archie Gray to thwart Plymouth’s attacks down the left flank, particularly by Mickel Miller.

Scoring opportunities were limited for both sides as halftime approached, but one chance nearly doubled Daniel Farke’s team’s lead. Joel Piroe made a brilliant solo run through Plymouth’s defense, setting up Georginio, whose shot deflected off the post.

Leeds entered halftime with a one-goal advantage courtesy of Gnonto’s early strike at Home Park, yet they remained mindful of Plymouth’s potential threats.

At the start of the second half, neither team made changes, and the battle resumed on the South Coast, with Farke’s squad now playing towards their passionate traveling supporters.

Echoing the previous encounters, Plymouth responded strongly in the second half, seeking to trouble the United defense. However, shots from Morgan Whittaker and Ben Waine failed to trouble Illan Meslier.

Leeds maintained composure and solidity while Plymouth pressed for an equalizer, ultimately seizing the right moment to strike and double their lead.

The combination that nearly succeeded in the first half proved successful in the second. Piroe initiated the attack and set up Georginio, who calmly finished low into the net.

Both teams made substitutions late in the game, with Leeds introducing Dan James and Connor Roberts in the final 10 minutes. James, shortly after coming on, earned a free-kick just outside the box, hitting the crossbar with his attempt.

This marked the final action of the match as Farke’s side departed with another valuable three points, extending their winning streak in the league.
