Southampton defeated Huddersfield Town at St Mary’s to maintain a one-point lead over Leeds United in the race for the second automatic promotion spot.

At Elland Road, where Daniel Farke’s team was cruising to a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United, the Saints had to fight back from behind twice to win 5-3.

Southampton pulled level after the break thanks to a swift brace from Joe Rothwell, after Sorba Thomas and David Kazumu had given the visitors an unexpected 2-0 lead. But the Terriers surprised their hosts once more, winning 3-2 due to a goal from Alex Matos shortly after the hour.

On the other hand, the highly effective Saints stormed back, leveling the score following an own goal by Tom Lees and taking the lead through Seko Mara in the closing moments. With a game remaining and a point ahead of Leeds, they maintain their second-place standing as Samuel Edozie’s injury-time fifth goal sealed the victory.

Leeds, on the other hand, increased their advantage over Ipswich Town in fourth place as the Tractor Boys were only able to draw 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion in fifth place. The Baggies had twice taken the lead before Omari Hutchinson’s late goal gave Ipswich a point.

Nathan Broadhead’s goal was followed by goals from Tom Fellows and John Swift for the visitors. With a game remaining, Ipswich is now three points behind Leeds. West Brom is still 11 points behind and in seventh place.

Those in charge Leicester City keeps moving forward. Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira scored goals to help them defeat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road. Hull City fell 1-0 against Swansea City, while Sunderland overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Plymouth Argyle 3-1. At QPR, Norwich City was defeated 2-2.
