The Green Bay Packers managed to secure a playoff spot with a late-season surge after facing challenges earlier in the year. Despite entering the Wild Card game as underdogs against the undefeated-at-home Dallas Cowboys, the Packers played exceptionally well and secured a notable 48-32 victory. However, a concerning trend persisted with rookie placekicker Anders Carlson, who missed an extra point during the game and had struggled with both extra points and field goals throughout the regular season, with five extra point misses and six failed field goal attempts.

In the subsequent divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, Carlson’s missed fourth-quarter field goal proved pivotal as the Packers ultimately lost by a narrow 24-21 margin. Reflecting on the season, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged that the team would have considered opting for a reliable veteran kicker if one had been available. He stated, “I think as we got towards the end of the season and were headed towards the playoffs, certainly, if there was a veteran option out there that would have been really good, then maybe we would have considered it. But there wasn’t. He was the best option by far. We’re really excited about where he’s going.”
