The remarks made by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Leeds United manager Daniel Farke will be of great interest to Sheffield Wednesday supporters curious about what to anticipate from newcomer Ian Poveda.

The winger, who is 23 years old, is not quite a spring chicken, but he also lacks a ton of experience. But he’s a man with a point to prove, nonetheless.

His skill has never been in doubt, and having grown up in the youth programs of Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona, Brentford, and Manchester City, he has quite the football education.

In January 2020, Leeds United signed him, gaining access to a talent with tremendous potential. Although his record of 30 appearances in four years at the club indicates that he is a player with a lot of learning ahead of him, he has shown promise at Elland Road.

The third loan transition of the Colombian international’s Leeds career, his move to Wednesday, offers him yet another chance to reach his full potential.

Here are some remarks made regarding one of Wednesday’s most recent hires.

Poveda began his professional career under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Guardiola claimed the winger had “incredible power to develop” when he was granted permission to join Leeds.

As reported by the Daily Star, Guardiola said: “[Poveda] is young, he has to play, he was not able and I think Leeds United is an incredible challenge to be training for one of the best or maybe the best manager in the world in terms of how he helps the players to be better players.

“He has an incredible power to develop. For the way Leeds play suits perfect for his qualities. I didn’t speak with Ian [before he left], but anyway, either way it’s a really good decision for him.”

Wednesday fans could be forgiven for asking questions about Poveda’s temperament considering he has failed to make the grade at both Manchester City and Leeds.

His Leeds teammate Stuart Dallas, however, paid tribute to the way in which the winger fitted in after joining. As reported by Leeds Live, Dallas said: “He’s trained with us a few days now and you’d think he’s been here since the start of the season, you know he’s lively about the place.

“I haven’t seen a player who’s taken to a group as well as he has taken and I’m being serious when I say that. Fast, direct, he’s quick, he’s fitted in really well.”

There was a disciplinary issue concerning Poveda while the winger was on loan at Blackpool, about which then Tangerines boss Mick McCarthy said: “I’ve had words with them [Poveda and Lewis Fiorini], I’ve told them what I expect and both of them have been fine. It’s difficult because they’re loan players. When they come they expect to play.

“However, after our excellent performance against Burnley, I believe that this team should be playing. They have both been doing well in their training and have both been fine. These guys are gifted, and just like we need everyone on our side, we need them all. They are, to be fair.

As recently as December, Leeds manager Daniel Farke lauded Poveda, despite the fact that he has been given permission to leave West Yorkshire.

Following his return from his foreign assignment, Poveda commented at a press conference: “Ian came back with a smile on his face, lots of confidence because he had good performances on this level.” He was really good this training week as well. I like what he’s demonstrated thus far.

Poveda is not exactly in the last chance saloon, but he does have time on his side. But a strong stint in South Yorkshire might serve as the spark that ignites his growth to pick up speed.
