Due to an injury, Trae Young is not part of the Atlanta Hawks rotation at this time. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic on Sunday, the All-Star guard needs surgery to repair a ruptured ligament on his left hand’s fifth finger.

Regarding Young’s current injury concern, former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins expressed his hope that Young won’t suit up for the Hawks in the future.

He made these remarks on the “Bully Ball” podcast, which features Rachel Nichols.

“I hope this is the last time we see him in a Hawks uniform,” Cousins said. “I feel like his talent is being wasted. His prime is being wasted. Get healthy. Get yourself 100% correct. Whether that’s in Atlanta or whether that’s with the San Antonio Spurs. It’s a match made in heaven. It just makes sense. This Hawks team isn’t doing anything for his talent. I take it personally because I was in that situation once. Hopefully, this offseason, he puts his foot down, uses his power, and moves to a situation that’s gonna be healthy for him.”

Over the previous few weeks, trade speculations have made reference to Young. Dejounte Murray was first thought to be Atlanta’s obvious trade chip. The Hawks are reportedly considering their alternatives, though.

The trade market would yield a higher return for Young. Atlanta has also had trouble developing a plan around his outstanding offensive toolkit. One big thing the Hawks haven’t been able to address is his defense.

The media seems to be leaning toward a possible trade to the San Antonio Spurs. Young would be forming a potent combination with Victor Wembanyama that can control play on both ends of the court.

Young would make sense as San Antonio’s next addition to the jigsaw. The Spurs also possess the required resources to put together a compelling trade deal.

The Hawks may or may not be open to trading their star guard, though. As of now, it’s all speculation. Still, you know it’s time for a change when former All-Stars are rooting for the transition to occur.
