With 1:25 left, Cleveland had a 0.9% chance of winning (per ESPN), but lost because of a missed game-winning three-pointer with seconds left.

On Monday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost their nine-game winning streak by a score of 123-121 to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Wine and Gold’s nine-game home winning streak came to an end with this loss.

But in the closing minutes of the game, Cleveland mounted a strong comeback attempt that almost overcame enormous odds, but Darius Garland missed a game-winning three-point shot with seconds remaining.

Kelly Oubre Jr.’s three-pointer put the Cavaliers ahead 120-110 with 1:25 left in the game. Philadelphia had a 99.1% chance of winning at this stage in the game, according to ESPN.

However, Garland’s three-pointer on the next possession sparked a 9-0 Cleveland run. Donovan Mitchell promptly converted an inbounds pass that was misdirected into a three-point play following a 76ers timeout. With 29.1 seconds remaining, the Wine and Gold defense then forced a shot clock violation, giving the Cavaliers the ball back.

After two missed three-pointers and offensive rebounds, Mitchell made a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to make the score 120-119. Philadelphia’s win probability dropped to 70.4% after this shot.

With 6.2 seconds remaining, Tyrese Maxey was intentionally fouled after the two sides eventually exchanged two free throws apiece. Two missed free throws later, the 76ers had a 123-121 lead.

Mitchell recovered from his own blocked layup attempt to throw the ball to Garland for a game-winning, but unsuccessful, three-point try on the game’s last possession.

J.B. Bickerstaff, the head coach of the Cavaliers, talked about his team’s ferocious late-game comeback attempt after the game.
