Town’s significant victory in the FA Women’s National League

After defeating Portishead Town Ladies 8-1 at home in Foundation Park on Sunday, Swindon Town Women easily won the FA Women’s National League.

Town’s lead was extended minutes later by another own goal, with Portishead having first opened the score. Meg Jarvis added a third goal just before the interval to give Swindon a larger lead.

After the break, Jarvis scored her second goal, and Annie Colston added two more in the second half. Late goals from Helena Diaz-Butcher and replacement Georgia Vandries completed Town’s crushing victory on Sunday afternoon.

The defender for Portishead Town mishandled a pass within a hazardous area to the goalkeeper, and the ball rolled straight down the middle of the net, giving Town an immediate goal.

Shortly after, the opposition would make another error when Jarvis was given space by Holly Beck-Esson, who quickly advanced down the right side. Jarvis blasted the ball into the box, where it bounced off the defender and increased Town’s lead.

But for a brief while, Portishead asserted their power and put pressure on Town’s defense; Captain Georgia Clifford’s strong defensive play prevented a strong Portishead attack.

After that, Jarvis had the opportunity to give Swindon an even bigger advantage. He chipped the ball perfectly while occupying only inches of space on the right side, capping an explosive first half-hour from Swindon.

Swindon Town Ladies 3 Portishead Town Ladies 0 at halftime.

The initial action of the second half would come from Portishead, who put on a strong display of play and created many goal opportunities, but Town’s keeper Emily McGrogan would be alert to stop every one of them.

Subsequently, Swindon regained control of the game, and Colston’s goal further increased their lead. Jarvis’s attempt was deflected, landing at Colston’s feet for Town’s fourth goal.

The following goal for Swindon was scored by substitute Vandries, who left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot after smashing the ball into the back of the net.

Regretfully, Portishead Town Ladies scored a goal from the penalty spot in the 88th minute, and McGrogan was unable to respond quickly enough.

Last Saturday, Swindon’s latest league test resulted in an 8-1 victory thanks to two goals scored in the closing minutes of the game by Jarvis and Diaz-butchered, who both skillfully curled the ball from the edge of the box and into the lower corners of the net.

In an attempt to continue their winning streak, Swindon Town Women will be looking forward to their upcoming test in a few weeks, which comes against Bridgwater United on March 10.

Women from Swindon Town: Beck-Esson (Graham 57), Haynes, Clifford (C), MacDonald, Colston, Diaz-Butcher, Strippel (Vandries 74), McGrogan, Viveash (Mugford 68), Randall, Jarvis, and MacDonald.
