JUST NOW: Maple Leafs Preparing to Make an Offer to Re-Sign $65 Million Forward.

In order to keep Mitch Marner on the team, the Toronto Maple Leafs are getting ready to extend a contract offer, according to NHL source Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

Since the season concluded, Marner has been the focus of trade rumors because he has one year remaining on his $65.4 million, six-year contract that he signed in 2019. Marner can block any transfer thanks to his complete no-movement clause, but numerous rumors have indicated that he might be open to being traded to a few other teams.

But as Friedman disclosed on his 32 Thoughts podcast on June 28, Toronto is considering extending Marner’s contract.

Friedman declared, “Aside from the fact that I do believe they’re getting ready to make him an offer, we’ll see,” he would avoid getting close to Mitch Marner.

It’s intriguing that Friedman thinks the Maple Leafs are getting ready to make Marner an offer, as everyone seemed to be expecting Toronto to move the talented winger.

In 69 regular season games with the Maple Leafs the previous year, Marner tallied 26 goals and 59 assists for 85 points. In seven playoff games for Toronto, he added one goal and two assists. In 576 regular season games during his career, he has amassed 639 points with 194 goals and 445 assists.

On July 1, Marner will be able to sign a contract extension with the Maple Leafs.

Marner Declares His Desire to Stay in Toronto
In an interview with the media after the Maple Leafs were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the opening round, Marner expressed his desire to stay in Toronto.

Marner has a social connection to his hometown team because he was born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area.

That would be the objective. I have told you how much I adore this place. Since I was raised here, it goes without saying that we will consider that and work to find a solution. Marner told the reporters on May 6 that “it means the world (to be a Maple Leaf), we’re looked upon as, you know, kind of Gods here to be honest.”

“You truly appreciate it, and the affection you receive from this fan base and the tension here is kind of similar to other fan bases. The love the Raptors still have for several of the players they had to deal this year was evident when they were a team a few years ago. And you kind of desire that kind of love,” Marner continued.

The Maple Leafs selected Marner fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

GM of the Maple Leafs Ignoring Marner Rumors
Marner has been the focus of numerous trade speculations and multiple mock moves heading into the NHL summer.

But in a statement to the media, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving stated he isn’t keeping an eye on the speculations involving Marner.

“I would advise us not to focus too much on some of the noise. The noise is too loud for us to respond to. .. Treliving told the media, “Mitch knows how I feel about him as a player,” according to Chris Johnston.

For the 2024–25 NHL season, Marner is expected to earn $10.9 million.
