Bulldogs forward Viliame Kikau is preparing himself mentally to face Penrith for the first time since departing the club. Kikau, who clinched back-to-back NRL premierships with the Panthers in 2021 and 2022, joined Canterbury last season. However, injuries prevented him from facing Penrith in 2023. Now, he’s gearing up for an emotional encounter as Canterbury takes on the Panthers at BlueBet Stadium.
Despite the sentimental weight of the match, Kikau is focused on maintaining his usual preparation routine. He acknowledges the significance of the occasion but stresses the importance of sticking to the game plan. Kikau, along with teammate Stephen Crichton, who also hails from Penrith, emphasizes the need to approach the game like any other.
While Kikau retains close ties with his former teammates and still resides in Penrith, he’s now fully committed to his role with the Bulldogs. Alongside other ex-Panthers in the Canterbury squad, including captain Stephen Crichton, Kikau acknowledges the influence of the Penrith contingent on the team’s resurgence.
Penrith’s Jarome Luai anticipates a tough battle against the Bulldogs, recognizing their defensive prowess under coach Cameron Ciraldo. Luai also reflects on the broader trend of players leaving Penrith for other clubs, acknowledging the Panthers’ ability to maintain their competitive edge despite these departures.
As for Luai himself, while he looks forward to a new challenge at the Wests Tigers next season, his current focus remains on finishing his time with Penrith on a high note. He praises the Bulldogs’ culture and performance but remains concentrated on the present.
Facing off against his former club, Kikau is wary of the formidable Nathan Cleary, Penrith’s star halfback. He knows he needs to be at his best to counter Cleary’s influence on the game. However, Kikau emphasizes the importance of adhering to the Bulldogs’ game plan and trusts that their preparation will lead to success.
