It seemed inevitable that LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey would eventually be made fun of on “Saturday Night Live,” and that time has come.

Her Mulkey character, played by seasoned cast member Heidi Gardner, was featured in the episode’s cold open on Saturday night. The skit parodied the CBS and TNT studio broadcast of the NCAA Tournament, featuring absurd jokes about Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson.

The humor mostly focused on how the women’s NCAA Tournament has become more well-known than the men’s, with Mulkey, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, and LSU star Angel Reese all becoming even more well-known.

Devon Walker, who was impersonating Smith said, “The women’s tournament is where the action’s at.”

Gardner makes a colorful entrance, wearing a pink jacket that featured plenty of roses and frills. She leans hard into Mulkey’s raspy Louisiana accent.

“It’s good to see y’all. You boys just dill my pickle,” Gardner said with an exaggerated Southern twang.

Gardner mentioned her pink jacket, saying, “I had it made to order. I just said to them, “Make it appear as though the Riddler visited Talbots.”

The actor playing Ernie Johnson approached Gardner and remarked, “Coach, you’re known for being tough on your players.” Some claim it’s too harsh.”

Mulkey’s usual outrage mixed with lazy Louisiana clichés was Gardner’s response.

James Austin Johnson, who portrayed Ernie Johnson, said to Gardner, “Coach, you’re known for being tough on your players. Some say too tough.”

Gardner’s response was a mix of trademark Mulkey indignation and lazy Louisiana stereotypes.

“Aw please, people just think I’m mean because I’ve got resting QAnon face. But that’s what it takes to win in the college game, and I work my girls hard every day. I make them run 10 miles breathing in Louisiana swamp gas. Then we practice full contact. If I don’t see hustle, I’ll throw a live alligator on the court. ‘You better box out that gator, don’t get ate up now.'”

When asked who she felt would win the NCAA men’s tournament, Gardner’s Mulkey character responded in the same way as Kenan Thompson’s Barkley character did earlier in the skit—that is, she pretended not to know who the men’s team even had.

“Oh, I see. State in the North-South.”

The LSU women’s basketball team is still the talk of the town when it comes to women’s hoops, despite South Carolina’s victory in the women’s national championship on Sunday, as demonstrated by the SNL spoof.
