Larocque’s absence was keenly felt during PWHL Toronto’s first loss in 12 games.
To a coach, post-loss excuses are akin to responding to a social media troll – essentially futile and unproductive.
With apologies to PWHL Toronto head coach Troy Ryan, let’s delve into an explanation—or an excuse, if you prefer—for Toronto’s first loss in a dozen games on Saturday in Ottawa.
Now, for those who argue that “it’s a team game,” this explanation might not sit well. However, we firmly believe that Toronto would have extended their winning streak to 12 games if Jocelyne Larocque had played in that match.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that Toronto didn’t perform at their peak on Saturday. They were outplayed physically, an unusual occurrence for this team, and they were outshot, which is also rare.
Larocque’s presence would have impacted both aspects of the game, but her absence was the most significant factor in this defeat.
Larocque was rightfully sidelined after a league review of a net-front scrum where she made a questionable move with her stick. Her absence marked the first time Toronto had to cope without one of their most reliable players, affecting the team on multiple levels. Physically, they lacked their usual intensity, as Larocque’s physical style was sorely missed. Additionally, her absence seemed to throw off the team’s balance, evident in her longtime defensive partner Renata Fast’s uncharacteristic performance.
Fast’s reliance on Larocque was evident, and her gameplay suffered as a result. This was evident in critical moments of the game, such as the game-tying goal in the third period, where Fast’s decision-making seemed off without Larocque’s presence.
However, it’s essential to acknowledge that complacency was creeping into Toronto’s game towards the end of their winning streak. Without Larocque to counterbalance this, the issue became more pronounced.
Toronto’s defensive structure heavily relies on the Larocque-Fast partnership. Their absence significantly increased the workload and responsibilities of other players, disrupting the team’s usual rhythm.
In hindsight, Toronto’s decision to prioritize the Larocque-Fast duo makes sense. They provide a solid defensive foundation and contribute significantly to the team’s success. While Saturday’s loss highlighted various shortcomings, Larocque’s absence was undeniably the most glaring factor.
