The Washington Commanders, who finished last in the NFC East in 2023–24, have made changes to their coaching staff. Dan Quinn, the new head coach, has decided to pursue former USC football assistant Kliff Kingsbury. Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator, will thus have difficulties upon his return.

According to Adam Schefter, Dan Quinn verified Eric Bieniemy’s decision to not rejoin the Commanders for the 2024–25 campaign. The former offensive coordinator worked for Washington for a full year. He is now considering new projects.

Kliff Kingsbury, a former senior offensive analyst for the USC Trojans, joins Washington as the team’s new offensive coordinator. From 2019 to 22, Kingsbury led the Arizona Cardinals as head coach prior to his position with USC. He was essential to Arizona’s 2021 offense’s success.

Coach Quinn praised the Commanders for selecting Kingsbury for their staff. In particular, the move brought to mind his hiring of former Atlanta Hawks offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, a noted offensive mind.

“[Shanahan] was extremely difficult to oppose…You felt the same as Kliff did when he was against you. Quin responded, “This is tough,” according to Ari Meirov.

Shanahan contributed to the Falcons having one of the NFL’s top offenses in 2016–17. Atlanta made it to Super Bowl LI, but the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady, prevailed. As head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Shanahan leads the team to Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

The Commanders are expecting similar results from Kliff Kingsbury. With a 4-13 record at the end of the 2023–24 season, Washington was ranked last in the NFC East. Even still, as the 2024 offseason approaches, the team is demonstrating a desire to get better.
