Since January, Emma Raducanu and Nick Cavaday have collaborated.
Emma Raducanu has spoken out about her choice to get back together with Nick Cavaday, her childhood coach, after undergoing surgery. When the British athlete changed instructors five times in the first eighteen months of her career, everyone took notice. Before the Australian Open, she made the decision to hire Nick Cavaday, and she has remained with him ever since. And now since her previous instructors were unable to comprehend her, she has clarified why they get along so well.
Raducanu, who returned from an eight-month sabbatical in January, is continuing her comeback this week in Indian Wells. Cavaday has joined the world No. 250, and the two are still going strong after he traveled to Melbourne for her second tournament of the year via plane from Down Under.

Raducanu has a habit of changing mentors quickly, so this is encouraging considering her past associations with them. But the 2021 US Open winner revealed that Cavaday knew her better than most, suggesting there was a reason why some of her previous relationships didn’t work out.

“It’s the familiarity aspect—I mean, I’ve known him for a long time—it’s very nice,” Raducanu said this week when speaking in Indian Wells to Sky Sports. “I think we just operate in the same manner.”

Not only Raducanu, though, as she acknowledged that Cavaday frequently struggles with such issues, felt misinterpreted. “I think we’re very complimentary of each other because I think a lot of coaches wouldn’t really understand the way that I like to operate and a lot of players wouldn’t understand how he likes to operate,” she went on.

The British coach had begun helping Raducanu at the National Tennis Centre in December when she took her timid first steps onto the practice court following three operations in the spring, even though their collaboration was made official at the Australian Open.
