Tate McDermott has committed to involving Suliasi Vunivalu early on in the winger’s anticipated return to Fiji as part of the Queensland Reds team. The Fijian-born winger is set to reclaim his starting position this week, with rising talent Tim Ryan taking a seat on the bench after an impressive streak of six tries in the last three games.

Sitting fifth in the standings with three matches remaining, the Reds must secure a victory against the Drua in Suva on Saturday to keep their hopes alive for a top-four finish and the chance to host a final.

Reflecting on Vunivalu’s recent form, halfback McDermott noted a slight dip in confidence for the Wallabies’ World Cup winger, despite his earlier strong performances. McDermott emphasized the importance of actively involving Vunivalu from the outset of the game, acknowledging the responsibility lies with the playmakers to facilitate his contribution.

Playing in front of a supportive crowd in Fiji presents an opportunity for Vunivalu to regain his top form, which would be significant for the Reds, McDermott added.

Recalling last year’s 41-17 defeat in Fiji, McDermott acknowledged the challenges posed by playing there, labeling it a difficult environment for visiting teams. He stressed the need for the Reds to execute well, focus on the fundamentals, and maintain a high level of effort to secure a win.

In addition to Vunivalu’s return, the Reds have opted to rest key players like Matt Faessler, Mac Grealy, and Josh Flook, giving Floyd Aubrey the chance to make his starting debut on the wing opposite Vunivalu.
