When Stoke City visits Ewood Park on Saturday (3pm kickoff), there might be a familiar face in the Blackburn Rovers dugout.

According to rumours, current Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson’s position is seriously in jeopardy. In addition, John Eustace, a former captain of Stoke City, is the early favorite to succeed the Dane in the event that he leaves the struggling team, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

In an “exclusive” report, the Telegraph says: “Rather than look for a caretaker boss, Eustace has emerged as an early favourite to succeed Tomasson. The 44-year-old was last in work at Birmingham City.

“Despite having the Blues in the play-off places, Eustace was dismissed in October and replaced by Wayne Rooney. That infuriated the Birmingham fans and Rooney’s reign was a disaster. He was subsequently replaced by former Rovers boss Tony Mowbray.”

Eustace had a difficult time with injuries throughout his tenure at Stoke, playing in 74 games between 2005 and 2008. In addition, he was among the early favorites to succeed Alex at the bet365 Stadium after Alex was fired late in the previous season; Steven Schumacher eventually took over.

Tomasson has become more and more irate at Ewood Park; this week, he made it known that he made an offer to leave the team last summer in response to a shift in the club’s budget. His mood soured last week when a deadline day transfer for American striker Duncan McGuire was threatened by a “administrative error.”

USA international Maguire was signed by Blackburn as a deadline day loan signing from Orlando City with the intention of making the move permanent. However, because the paperwork was not filed in a timely manner, the EFL has not approved the agreement.

On the field, Blackburn has fallen to the bottom of the Championship table with just one win in their last eleven games. This Saturday afternoon’s meeting against Stoke, who are one point below and in urgent need of form and confidence, is crucial.

And if Eustace is hired by Blackburn, he will have to travel back to St Andrew’s on February 13 to play Birmingham City.
