Southampton manager Russell Martin appeared uncertain about Jason Wilcox’s potential departure to Manchester United, particularly following a distressing defeat to Ipswich Town. Although Martin was reluctant to delve into the matter after the game, reports emerged suggesting Wilcox’s move to Old Trafford to assume a technical director role, leaving his current position as director of football at Southampton.

The timing of the move has irked the Championship side, especially amidst their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League, compounded by a disagreement over the compensation owed if Wilcox departs. Manchester United purportedly offered an amount equivalent to a year’s salary, which they believe activates a release clause, yet Southampton is contesting this.

Southampton’s 3-2 defeat at Portman Road, sealed by a 97th-minute winner for Ipswich, further exacerbated Martin’s reluctance to address Wilcox’s situation post-match.

Martin expressed frustration, stating, “I’ve been hearing he’s going to leave for six weeks in the media, nothing’s changed… I spoke to Jason this morning, we’ve had a game, I’m here to talk about the game, not about Jason.” He emphasized the need to focus on the game’s outcome before discussing personnel matters.

Although Wilcox is anticipated to transition from Southampton to Manchester United, Martin preferred to concentrate on the team’s performance, acknowledging Wilcox’s contributions but emphasizing his desire to address the defeat first.
