“I’m not the primary option on this team,” explains the former Raptors star. “My role is to support and assist the main offensive players.”

Nick Nurse has closely observed Kyle Lowry’s ability to dominate NBA games, so it came as no surprise to the Philadelphia 76ers head coach when the 38-year-old Lowry delivered his most impressive performance since joining the Sixers with a 23-point, six-assist display against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite Philadelphia’s loss in that game, Nurse commended Lowry’s assertive approach.

“I had a feeling this was on the horizon. I’m not anticipating 20 or 25 points from him every game, but it’s definitely a welcomed sight once in a while,” Nurse commented Sunday, prior to his team’s 135-120 victory over the Raptors at Scotiabank Arena.

Toronto suffered their 13th consecutive loss as Lowry and the 76ers aimed to end their three-game skid. Despite missing key players like Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, Philadelphia had no trouble handling a severely depleted Raptors squad, which was without six regulars due to injuries and personal matters.

Kelly Oubre Jr. led the charge for the Sixers with 32 points, supported by Cameron Payne with 24 and Tobias Harris with 21.

Although the Raptors attempted to keep the game competitive, narrowing the deficit to under 10 points early in the fourth quarter, they couldn’t overcome the Sixers’ exceptional three-point shooting performance, making 24 of 43 attempts from beyond the arc.

Gary Trent Jr. led Toronto with 23 points, followed by Jordan Nwora with 19 off the bench, and Kelly Olynyk with 18 points and 11 assists.

Lowry, who joined his hometown team in February following a buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, has gradually integrated into games with the Sixers after being sidelined for weeks. In his 18 games with Philadelphia, he has averaged 8.6 points and 4.5 assists in 28.5 minutes per game. Against the Raptors, Lowry played 37 minutes, recording 11 points and 10 assists, while expressing his enjoyment in adapting to his role with the Sixers.

Nurse emphasized Lowry’s significance to the team, noting his contributions to organization and defense, along with his recent offensive resurgence.

Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic highlighted Lowry’s championship experience and leadership, acknowledging his value in fostering a winning culture within the organization.

A six-time All-Star, Lowry spent nine impactful years with Toronto, notably contributing to the franchise’s 2019 championship victory. He has indicated his desire to continue playing beyond this season and expressed his wish to retire as a Raptor.
