Over the past few years, former head coach of the New York Jets Rex Ryan has been discreetly preparing for an NFL comeback. However, after Mike Zimmer was reportedly chosen to be the Dallas Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, Ryan’s dreams of making a return this season appeared to be dashed.

It was believed that the former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings was expected to sign with the Cowboys this weekend, but it appears that things may have changed. Even though Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and other sources said that Zimmer’s signing with the Cowboys was finalized, that may not be the case.

On Sunday’s NFL Countdown Super Bowl pregame program, Ryan refuted the allegation, stating that Zimmer’s employment was not a “fact”. Ryan hinted that he was still being considered for the job.

It seems that he may have a valid point. When asked about the Cowboys’ hiring of a defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, reiterated the earlier report, claiming that the contract was still pending.

He also expressed interest in the Cowboys, saying they “loved” Ryan and had gotten in touch with him regarding the job. Ryan’s hopes of making a return may not be over yet.

Rex Ryan, the former head coach of the New York Jets, may be making a comeback to the NFL. Jets fans are familiar with Ryan. From 2009 to 2014, Ryan led the Jets to successive AFC Championship Game appearances by building one of the league’s finest defenses. Ryan was a noisy and unrepentant coach.

Although we haven’t seen Ryan in the NFL in years, he was one of the best defensive brains in football at his best. Actually, Ryan hasn’t served as a coach at any level since the Buffalo Bills fired him in 2016. It was eight years in the past.

It’s evident that the Cowboys valued experience when choosing their defensive coordinator, since Ryan, Zimmer, and Ron Rivera were all candidates to succeed the well-liked Dan Quinn.

Ryan most definitely meets that description. The 61-year-old coached at college for 12 years in addition to 17 years in the NFL. Although Ryan has plenty of experience, it’s interesting to consider how his defensive strategy would change after eight years away from the game. In that period, the sport has seen significant change.

Sadly, the Jets’ past season’s game against the Cowboys means they won’t play them again until 2027, at the latest. Still, it would be entertaining to see Ryan back in the NFL.

The comeback tour of Rex Ryan may still go forward!
