The Cleveland Browns’ robust quarterback roster, while providing depth, raises questions about their confidence in Deshaun Watson. Despite the understandable desire for quality backups, especially given Watson’s limited game time due to injuries, the Browns’ decision to sign both Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley has sparked curiosity.

Watson’s recent season-ending shoulder surgery and his pivotal upcoming year add to the intrigue. The addition of Huntley, a former starter for the Baltimore Ravens, alongside Winston, a former No. 1 overall pick, suggests potential concerns about Watson’s durability and effectiveness.

Tony Grossi of The Land on Demand and ESPN 850 suggested that the Browns’ past decision to rely on rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the top backup behind Watson in the 2023 season might have been a mistake. The signing of Huntley could be seen as a corrective measure, serving as a cost-effective insurance policy in case of injuries to Watson and Winston. Despite assurances about Watson’s condition, the emphasis on experienced backup quarterbacks implies that nothing is guaranteed.

Since joining the Ravens in 2020, Tyler Huntley has not held a permanent starting role but has been called upon numerous times to substitute for two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. With a similar style to Jackson, Huntley is known for his mobility and dual-threat ability as both a passer and a rusher. In his career, Huntley has started nine games, earning a record of 3-6 across multiple seasons, and has appeared in a total of 20 games.

His unexpected Pro Bowl nod came in 2022 when he filled in for Jackson and led the team to a 2-2 record. During that season, Huntley showcased a completion rate of 67%, throwing for 658 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Additionally, he contributed 137 rushing yards and scored 1 touchdown on the ground.

Throughout his career, Huntley has completed 64.6% of his passes for a total of 1,957 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He has also rushed 115 times for 509 yards at an average of 4.4 yards per carry, scoring 3 touchdowns. The Cleveland Browns secured the 26-year-old quarterback on a one-year contract valued at just under $1.3 million.
