The New York Yankees have received a concerning update on Gerrit Cole’s health after his first Spring Training start, as the ace experienced abnormal discomfort in his right elbow and is set to undergo an MRI.

While it’s early to sound alarms, the Yankees were already exploring additional pitching options this offseason, having been named as the only team to make a formal offer to reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

With Cole’s status uncertain, the Yankees may intensify their pursuit of pitching reinforcements. Christopher Kline of FanSided suggests that the team should consider signing six-time All-Star Zack Greinke as a potential replacement for Cole.

In his 20 seasons in the majors, Greinke has accumulated a career 3.49 ERA, nearly 3,000 strikeouts, and over 3,300 innings pitched. Despite his age and recent performance, including a 5.06 ERA season in 2023, Greinke remains durable and boasts excellent control, factors that could still make him valuable to the Yankees.

However, the Yankees have other options to explore if Cole’s injury proves significant. They could revisit the possibility of trading for Snell or turn to internal options such as prospects Will Warren and Clayton Beeter.

While there’s no indication yet that Cole will miss extended time, the Yankees are likely to keep a close eye on the situation and consider all available avenues to address any potential absence.
