LATEST NEWS: Three Cowboys who might become famous in 2024

The Dallas Cowboys are about to embark on one of the most significant seasons in the team’s recent history, and in order to surpass predictions, they will require a surprise performance from one or more players.

From their postseason loss to the Packers, the squad has been vocally determined to getting above their hump. This is evident in the language they have used.

Dallas must get things right in 2024, or else there will be a major organizational restructuring.

This time, it’s imperative that all front-office staff members, coaches, and players lock in.

But the 2023 team needs to strengthen its roster if they are to succeed; they cannot do it alone.

The Cowboys need players who are currently on the roster to improve their game for the upcoming season; this goes beyond just selecting players in the draft or through free agency.

There needs to be a strong effort made to maximize the potential of the players who have not yet shown up because there are simply too many holes in the squad and not enough money to address everything this offseason.

The Cowboys will look to these three players in particular to succeed in 2024.

Razor Sharps, Mazi Smith
To suggest that Mazi Smith, the 2023 first-round selection, had a dismal rookie campaign would be a massive understatement.

Smith, who was selected 27th overall in the previous round, had the same number of sacks and fewer total tackles than his expected replacement, fourth-year defensive tackle Neville Gallimore.

Smith gave the Cowboys defensive line almost nothing to work with.

Furthermore, it has been reported that he has lost over 30 pounds since the draft, which is odd given that they selected him as a nose tackle.

Smith fared poorly overall, and the company mishandled his growth. For a rookie season, that is about as awful of a combination as it gets.

It’s almost make-or-break time for the former Michigan Wolverine as 2024 approaches.

Dallas is already considering adding a big man to the defensive line, and Mike Zimmer, the new defensive coordinator, is not going to hand a player he did not choose snaps based just on name.

Smith will need to win playing time, but more importantly, he needs to perform exceptionally well in 2024.

Should Smith perform at the caliber for which Dallas selected him, it would be equivalent to obtaining two first-round selections in the current draft.

It might end up being a major reward for the Cowboys between Smith making his first significant impact and whatever the organization selects in the 2024 selection.

Jalen Tolbert, wide receiver
Jalen Tobert, a former third-round selection, is the best example of a player in need of a breakthrough season.

His last season in Dallas is 2024, and it might be his best one to date.

The Cowboys will cut veteran wide receiver Michael Gallup, select a rookie in the first three rounds, then add a cheap addition as depth if they proceed as we anticipate with their receiver class.

With CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and either rookie or Tolbert at WR3, Dallas would have a depth chart to work with.

That’s a great opportunity for a man who has only caught 24 passes in two seasons. If he does not make the most of it, it will probably be his last as well.

Dallas immediately collapsed under Tolbert’s lofty expectations when he arrived.

His debut season saw him catch just two passes; hence, this year accounted for 22 of his career receptions, including his lone score.

Even while his 2023 performance is nothing to get excited about, it is an improvement and might indicate he is ready for a breakthrough year in 2024.

With his history with the scheme, his relationship with Dak Prescott, and his two seasons of development under his belt, Tolbert may have an early advantage over a rookie when it comes to opportunities.

Tolbert still has time to make a difference, and 2024 is the ideal year to do it.

LB, DeMarvion Exhibited
The Cowboys front staff was ecstatic to select former Texas Longhorn DeMarvion Overshown in the third round of the previous draft, and it is hard to exaggerate it.

Unfortunately, when he tore his ACL during the preseason, that excitement was immediately dashed.

With the season-ending neck injury to starter linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, this injury left a huge void at linebacker. Overshown’s absence was particularly felt during that time.

Enhancing the linebacker room is a primary goal for this offseason, and bringing a healthy Overshown back might be the greatest addition of all.

He needs to take advantage of this opportunity if he wants to be the Cowboys’ finest man at the position in 2024.

The onus is on Overshown to live up to the enormous expectations.

Players aren’t always ready right away following an injury of that nature, as Terence Steele’s appearance this season after his ACL tear demonstrated.

This implies that Dallas won’t add to the position because of Overshown, even though they are thrilled to have him back. They will probably target linebackers in both the draft and free agency.

Overshown interprets this in two ways.

First of all, the linebacker room will be full of unfamiliar faces, and his Dallas experience—even if he did not play—might give him an advantage right away.

Second, he will need to demonstrate that the injury is behind him and earn his time.

Depending on how he uses the opportunity, Overshown has a strong chance to lead the Dallas defense in a breakout campaign in 2024.
