LATEST NEWS:Coach Bobby Babich of the Bills is promoted to defensive coordinator.

After much searching, the Buffalo Bills and head coach Sean McDermott have appointed Bobby Babich, a longtime assistant and former linebackers coach, as defensive coordinator.

NFL Network analyst Ian Rapoport said on Tuesday, “The #Bills are promoting LBs coach Bobby Babich to be their new defensive coordinator, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo.” “Since 2017, Babich has advanced in Buffalo and now holds a key position for Sean McDermott.”

When Sean McDermott took over as the team’s DC in 2011, Babich began his NFL coaching career as an administrative assistant for the Carolina Panthers. After 2012, Babich moved on to seek other chances, but they reconnected in 2017 when McDermott was hired as the head coach of the Bills.

Babich has been with Buffalo for seven seasons, rising through the ranks from assistant defensive backs coach to safeties coach to linebackers coach to defensive coordinator for the Bills.

Given that Babich had been interviewed three times by the Bills’ AFC East opponent Miami Dolphins for the vacant DC position, this decision might have been a defensive one (pun intended).

How much of a role Bobby Babich, the Bills defensive coordinator, will play is a major question.

The squad spent the whole 2022 season without an official DC because Leslie Frazier, the previous DC, resigned following the season. As a defensive coordinator by profession, McDermott was in charge of calling defensive plays. The Bills defense finished fourth in points allowed and tenth in yards allowed last season despite lacking a committed center fielder and suffering an unbelievable string of injuries.
