It appears that Sunderland will be active before the January transfer window closes at 11 p.m. tomorrow.

At 11 p.m. on Thursday, the January transfer window shuts for business.

Leo Hjelde arrived at Sunderland yesterday on a permanent contract from Leeds United, beginning the club’s transfer activity for the month. Like many other Championship teams, Sunderland has had a difficult start to the month.

Under-fire manager Michael Beale will undoubtedly be hoping for a few more names to walk through the Stadium of Light doors, but it appears that some may also be leaving.

Here are three players that Sunderland may lose before the January transfer window ends.

Pritchard, Alex
Alex Pritchard is the first, and possibly most obvious, contender to depart before the deadline.

After it was revealed prior to the most recent match against Stoke City that the 30-year-old was refusing to be selected and that he wanted to quit the team as soon as possible, he lost his status as the fan favorite.

Pritchard is rumored to be returning to Birmingham City, where he would work with old manager Tony Mowbray; the Blues could pay as little as £100,000.

Jack C. Clarke

In the remaining minutes of this month’s transfer window, Jack Clarke would be the high-profile exit from Sunderland.

After scoring 13 goals in the first half of the 2023–24 Championship season, Sunderland’s star player has once again become the talk of the transfer market, with Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Lazio all interested in signing him.

According to Michael Graham, Sunderland would need to receive above £20 million before considering selling, and even then, it would be doubtful. The latter are reported to have made a £15 million approach.

However, Clarke is still a player that may be traded, particularly if a team makes a substantial, late offer.

Matete Jay
The guy forgotten in Sunderland Another player who might be moving before 11 p.m. tomorrow is Jay Matete, since it was revealed last week that two teams are attempting to sign the midfield player.

The 22-year-old, who last season assisted in leading Plymouth Argyle to promotion from League One, is yet to appear in a Championship game under Beale’s direction.

Matete may be able to depart the team on loan if another midfield player is brought in.
