LATEST NEWS:Victor Wembanyama Struggles Against Cavaliers Defense

Clearly, Victor Wembanyama was the first overall selection in the previous year’s draft. The decision to choose a player who may prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime talent shouldn’t have required the San Antonio Spurs to consider their options carefully.

Wembanyama has, for the most part, lived up to the anticipation throughout his first season. He’s shooting 46% from the field and averaging 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. Victor will still appear awkward and inexperienced in certain games, though, and one of those nights was against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers defeated the Spurs handily when they traveled to San Antonio to play them.

Even though Wembanyama finished with 19 points, his shooting percentage of just 31% (5–16) from the field told a different story. Furthermore, the free-throw line was used for seven of those points.

Evan Mobley, in particular, played excellent defense against Wembanyama during their five-minute battle. The rookie was held to just 11 points by Cleveland’s forward on a 20% shooting clip (2–10). In this brief period of time, Mobley also made Victor give up the ball twice.

Wembanyama found it difficult to contain the Cavaliers’ frontcourt, in addition to having a challenging offensive game. According to NBA Stats, Mobley scored an astounding 17 points in their encounter.

Wembanyama’s performance shouldn’t be the primary focus of this discussion. Rather, it ought to focus on the dominance of Cleveland’s frontcourt pair. Mobley and Jarrett Allen’s return to the court on Saturday served as a welcome reminder of their ability as it has been a while.
